Why 'Tauranga' Is the Wrong Keyword (And Papamoa Is the Right One)

People here search for their suburb, not their city. If your website only says Tauranga, you're invisible where the growth actually is.

Nobody searches for the city they're technically in

They search for where they live. A family who moved to Papamoa last month types "plumber Papamoa". Someone at the Mount types "electrician Mount Maunganui" — because the Mount barely thinks of itself as Tauranga at all.

Now look at your website. Does it name those places? For most Tauranga businesses the answer is no. The site says "servicing Tauranga and surrounds" and stops. So when those searches happen, you don't appear.

Why this matters more here than almost anywhere

Tauranga's growth is not evenly spread. Papamoa has absorbed an extraordinary number of new households. Pyes Pa and Ōmokoroa keep expanding. Every one of those households is a first-time customer for someone — no existing plumber, no dentist, no builder, no loyalty.

They find their suppliers by searching. Whoever appears, wins — often for years.

How to claim a suburb properly

Do it well, or don't do it

The lazy version — twenty near-identical pages with the suburb name swapped — is a doorway-page pattern. Google treats it as spam and it will hurt you. We won't build them.

The proper version is one genuinely useful page per suburb you actually serve: what you do there, how fast you can get there, what the typical jobs look like, real specifics. If you can't write something genuinely useful about serving that suburb, you probably shouldn't have a page for it.

Set your service area

Your Google Business Profile lets you define the areas you cover. If you'll drive to Ōmokoroa, say so.

Get reviews that mention the place

You can't script these — that's fake, and it's a Fair Trading Act problem as well as a Google one. But when you ask right after a job, customers naturally mention where it was. Those reviews are a genuine local relevance signal.

The uncomfortable maths

"Plumber Tauranga" is contested by every plumber in the city. "Plumber Papamoa" is contested by almost nobody — and the person searching it is closer to picking up the phone. One of those is a fight. The other is a gap.
